JUAN (Don George) and Don Antonio de ULLOA. A Historical Journey through South America, Undertaken by Order of the King of Spain. And Containing a History of the Incas of Peru. Paris, Charles-Antoine Jombert, 1752. 2 volumes in-4, marbled calfskin, decorated spine, red edges (contemporary binding). First edition of the French translation, illustrated with 2 engraved frontispieces—one by J. Punt and the other by Duflos after Bernard Picart—and 53 maps and plates, several of which are fold-out. (Sabin, no. 36812.) An account of the journey of Juan and Ulloa, officers commissioned by the Spanish Crown to accompany and supervise the geodetic expedition led by La Condamine, Bouguer, and Godin in South America from 1735 to 1744. Faded wet stamp on the title page and remnants of a call number label. Some plates are discolored in the second part of Volume II. Water stains, light foxing. Two split spines on Volume I, a circular mark on one cover of Volume II, rubbed edges and corners, and a missing cap on one cover.
