Jules Pascin (1885-1930) - Sous-bois avec artistes au travail - NO RESERVE

Jules Pascin (1885–1930) — Undergrowth with Artists at Work Watercolor on paper, signed bottom right. This work depicts a gathering of figures in a woodland undergrowth, with painters at work at the heart of the scene. The overall impression is one of genuine creative effervescence in a clearing, in a mood that is at once intimate and lively. The watercolor treatment is delicate and fairly diluted, in a range of soft and slightly muted tones. The absence of sky reinforces the sense of being immersed in vegetation and gives the composition its enveloping character. The setting evokes outdoor ateliers frequented by artists, with an atmosphere that can particularly recall Fontainebleau landscapes, though no specific location can be stated. The work measures about 25 × 19 cm in its mat and is presented in a frame of about 36 × 30 cm. The signature is located bottom right. On the back of the frame, a chalk manuscript inscription reads: “Julius Mordecai Pinkus – “Jules Pascin”.” Julius Mordecai Pinkus is Jules Pascin’s birth name. The work was acquired as part of a sale held on October 17, 2023 by the Salle de ventes du Béguinage in Wavre, Belgium, for the benefit of the FNRS. It was catalogued there as “Watercolor by Jules Pascin,” lot 81. The attribution to Jules Pascin is thus the one adopted by the auction house for this sale. No independent appraisal or certificate of authenticity is provided with the work. An intimate and lively watercolor, particularly interesting for the presence of artists at work and this impression of creative effervescence in the middle of the clearing.
