Karl Gerstener (1930-2017) - Sculpture, Algorhitmus 2 - 32 cm - Acrylic - 1972

Karl Gerstner Algorithm 2, screen printing on acrylic, 32 x 32 x 9.5 cm, 1975 Karl Gerstner (born July 2, 1930 in Basel; died January 1, 2017 in the same place) was a Swiss graphic designer, advertiser, author of technical books, painter of concrete art, and a major representative of Swiss typography. Since the surfaces are designed asymmetrically, for a single plate there are initially: Front side visible: 4 orientations — top, bottom, left, right Back side visible: 4 orientations — top, bottom, left, right so 2 x 4 = 8 different image orientations per plate. With four plates, the orientations yield: 8^4 = 4,096 The four distinguishable plates can also be arranged in 4! = 24 different sequences in a row. Thus: 4,096 x 24 = 98,304 There are thus 98,304 possible configurations, when 1. every plate can show front or back, 2. every visible image surface can be brought into four orientations — top, bottom, left, right —, 3. the four plates can be arranged in any order, 4. and no two color surfaces or orientations are visually identical. That corresponds to the astonishingly large number of variants that can arise from only four physical plates. The front plate always allows the three plates behind it to remain visible through its transparent areas. Each configuration is a superposition of four individual image states. The 98,304 is the number of possible arrangements from which the visible compositions result. The additional variants made possible by lighting are, of course, virtually infinite.
