These journeys took them through Mangkayi, her father's Country, and the neighbouring places of Ngantalarra and Nakarra Nakarra, while periodic visits to Gordon Downs Station provided essential supplies including flour, tea, sugar and tobacco. As a young woman, Kathleen moved with her family to Sturt Creek Station, where she worked in the laundry. There she met her husband, Paddy Paddoon, who worked in the station's stock camp. After the birth of their first children, the family relocated to the old Balgo Mission. Kathleen worked in the mission gardens and bakery while her children lived in the mission dormitories. Whenever possible, the family returned to Sturt Creek during weekends and holidays, maintaining their enduring connection to Country. Kathleen began painting in the late 1980s, developing a highly distinctive visual language centred on the Country and ancestral narratives of Nakarra Nakarra. By the early 2000s she had become recognised as one of the senior painters of the Balgo region, celebrated for powerful compositions dominated by rich reds and whites. As the senior Law woman responsible for the Nakarra Nakarra (Seven Sisters) Tjukurrpa, she carried the songs, ceremonies and cultural knowledge associated with this important site. Following a period away from painting, Kathleen returned to the studio with renewed energy in the final years of her life, producing an exceptional body of work that culminated in her second and final solo exhibition in 2019. Kathleen's paintings depict Nakarra Nakarra, an important site south of Balgo connected to the Seven Sisters Tjukurrpa. The story follows seven ancestral sisters travelling across the desert while pursued by an old man intent on taking the youngest sister as his wife. At Nakarra Nakarra, a group of hills embodies the sisters themselves. Within Kathleen's paintings, circular forms often represent tjurrnu (soakwaters), while bold fields of red evoke the ceremonial dances performed by the women. © KATHLEEN PADDOON / Copyright Agency, 2026
