Katsuhiko Hibino (1958) - Mujer

Katsuhiko Hibino (born 1958 in Gifu, Japan) is a renowned Japanese contemporary artist, designer, and academic, widely famous since the 1980s for his innovative works of art crafted from cardboard. Throughout his career, Hibino has expanded his artistic practice into interdisciplinary projects spanning public art, theater set design, and the direction of art festivals. He is currently a key figure in Japan’s artistic institutions, serving as president of Tokyo University of the Arts, director of the Gifu Museum of Fine Arts, and director of the Kumamoto Contemporary Art Museum. Highlights of his career • Cardboard as a medium: He broke onto the art scene as a student, gaining wide attention for transforming ordinary cardboard into expressive sculptures and three-dimensional pieces. • Community and social projects: In recent years, he has focused on participatory regional art projects. Among them are "TURN" (started in 2015), which promotes interaction among diverse people beyond their disabilities, gender, or nationalities, and the project "DOOR" (Diversity on the Arts Projects), focused on the intersection between art and social well-being. • International projection: He has represented Japan and participated in prestigious international events such as the Venice Biennale (1995) and the Sydney Biennale, in addition to collaborating with initiatives in Latin America such as Bienalsur. • Recognitions: He has been awarded multiple honors in Japan, including the Grand Prize ADC (1983), the Mainichi Design Grand Prize (1999), and the Artistic Encouragement Award granted by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (2015).
