He joined Takao Saitō’s production company in 1970 before moving to Kazuo Koike’s Studio Ship in 1972. This professional lineage provides a meaningful context for the present pages: their commanding close-ups, carefully controlled shadows and lucid action staging reflect an approach to storytelling in which expressive force is supported by rigorous graphic construction. Iga later revisited that creative milieu in his autobiographical manga Gekiga no Kamisama: Saitō Takao to Koike Kazuo no Jidai, published in 2024. Identified as pages from Enshirō Buraiken, this consecutive pair captures a confrontation moving from accusation to swordplay. The first sheet establishes the emotional stakes through a wide opening panel, placing a stern swordsman before a fallen figure. Two intermediate panels juxtapose an opponent’s stance with an emphatic close-up of his raised weapon, before the page concludes with an imposing portrait of the protagonist. The second sheet translates that accumulated tension into movement, staging the encounter around a substantial wooden post beneath a full moon. The pair’s particular strength is its inking. In the concluding portrait of the first page, broad black passages divide the face into sharply opposed planes of light and shadow. Closely spaced hatching models the cheeks and brow, while the pale eyes remain strikingly clear within the surrounding darkness. The image holds the reader’s attention through restraint: the expression is controlled, yet the arrangement of blacks gives it considerable dramatic weight. On the following page, Iga shifts from psychological concentration to spatial choreography. Curving motion lines describe the opponent’s attack, while successive views of the post, the swordsman’s face and the passing blade break the action into legible stages. The tall panel at the left gathers the figures, timber and moon into a strong vertical composition. Its textured wood, patterned clothing and tonal sky establish distinct surfaces without obscuring the central encounter. The moon and small winged silhouettes add an atmospheric counterpoint to the immediate tension below. Together, the sheets offer more than two isolated highlights. The transition from the first page’s monumental close-up to the second page’s articulated movement allows a collector to follow the relationship between anticipation and action in the original drawing. Their complementary qualities—portraiture and choreography, concentrated blacks and fine textures—make this an especially coherent pairing for a collection devoted to historical manga or the graphic language of gekiga.
