Kina necklace and value shell from Mendi, Southern Highlands. Condition: see photos This is a beautiful Kina shell necklace from the Melpa tribe in the Western Highlands, Papua New Guinea. The Kina shell is used as currency throughout Papua New Guinea. Traded from the coast to the highlands. Kina shells are used for bride price, compensations and to display wealth. These would be exchanged at celebrations. Papua New Guinea banknotes are named after the Kina shell. Chest jewelry made from the polished shell and colored with rotan (rotholz) powder.
