[King Charles XII Bible] - BIBLIA GOTICA - [In Swedish] - 1747

DESCRIPTION: I present at auction a BEAUTIFUL BIBLE OF CHARLES XII in Baroque style, COMPLETELY WRITTEN IN GOTHIC SCRIPT and printed in Stockholm (Sweden) in the year of our Lord 1747, a deeply spiritual work that reflects the religiosity of 18th-century Sweden. 280 YEARS OLD. Our Bible is an early edition of “The Bible of Charles XII (in Swedish: Karl XII:s bibel)”. This is a translation of the Bible into Swedish, promoted by King Charles XI in 1686 to produce a version updated and modernized from the old translation of 1541, known as the “Gustav Vasa Bible.” Charles XI died before the work was completed, so the new Bible translation bore the name of his son, the king Charles XII. The translation was completed in 1703. Our book is a true time capsule that transports us to the era of King Frederick I of Sweden (1676-1751), successor of Charles XII, and the only Swedish king from the House of Hesse-Kassel, which is why Bibles published during his reign have a special rarity and flavor. Its style and typography are a direct window into the religious feeling of a nation that was one of the pillars of European Christianity. Beautiful original full-leather binding, in generally good condition with some scuffs, as shown in the photos. Spine with five raised bands decorated with gold vegetal motifs and rulings, with the title in gold letters. Gilded edges. Exquisite edition with magnificent two-color covers (red and black), printed in delicious and elegant Gothic script with text in two columns, which always gives the book a special flavor.
