KITTY SIMON NAPANANGKA Warlpiri language, 1948 - 2024 Mina Mina, 2013 acrylic on linen 180 x 61.5 cm bears inscription verso: 680-13, Kitty Simon, Mina Mina PROVENANCE Warnayaka Art, Northern Territory, Cat No. 680-13 Coo-ee Art Gallery, New South Wales, Cat No. 13-11541 Private Collection, Germany Accompanied by certificates of authenticity from Warnayaka Art and Coo-ee Art Gallery EXHIBITED Kitty Simon Napanangka: Mina Mina, 9 - 30 November 2013, Coo-ee Art Gallery, Sydney, New South Wales Kitty Simon Napanangka was one of the most distinctive senior Warlpiri artists of her generation, celebrated for paintings that combine bold abstraction with profound cultural authority. A respected custodian of women's Law, she painted the Mina Mina Jukurrpa, one of the most important ceremonial narratives belonging to Warlpiri women. This ancestral story tells of women who emerged at the sacred site of Mina Mina carrying karrpanu (digging sticks), travelling across the desert and creating the landscape through song, ceremony and movement. Beginning her painting practice in the late 1980s and returning to it in 2008, Simon developed a highly individual visual language defined by luminous pastel colour, rhythmic dotting and sweeping, free-flowing forms. Rather than depicting the landscape literally, her paintings evoke the physical and spiritual features of Mina Mina through an intricate symbolic language: black for burnt Country, white for digging sticks and salt, blue for the waters of Lake Mackay, and pink for women's Country. Simon painted while singing the songs of her ancestors, embedding ceremony, memory and cultural knowledge into every canvas. Although her innovative style initially challenged expectations of Western Desert painting, it quickly gained widespread recognition. Her landmark solo exhibition at Cooee Art in 2013 established her as a major contemporary artist, with subsequent exhibitions in Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom confirming her reputation as one of the leading interpreters of the Mina Mina Jukurrpa. © KITTY NAPANANGKA SIMON / Copyright Agency, 2026
