The second volume of this history of photography conceived by Hans-Michael Koetzle, covering the period 1928–1991. In it, the author examines a selection of photographs that have become iconic of the 20th century, placing them within their historical, aesthetic, and technical contexts. The book brings together the works of leading figures in modern and contemporary photography and analyzes the origins and legacy of certain images that have gone down in history. It features numerous photographic reproductions, in black-and-white and color, including several full-page and double-page spreads. Among the images reproduced are, notably, Richard Peter Sr.’s famous photograph showing Dresden in ruins, as well as numerous documents related to the political, social, and artistic history of the 20th century.
