Very extensive illustrations, mainly in black and white: 237 illustrations, including 9 in color. Bibliography and index. French first edition of this important catalog, published on the occasion of the exhibition “Photography and Surrealism,” held at the National Museum of Modern Art, Centre Georges Pompidou, from April 15 to June 15, 1985. A reference work dedicated to the decisive role of photography in the Surrealist movement. It notably features works by Hans Bellmer, Man Ray, André Kertész, Brassaï, Marcel Duchamp, René Magritte, Salvador Dalí, Max Ernst, André Breton, Raoul Ubac, Dora Maar, and Jacques-André Boiffard. The essays explore, among other topics, photography in the service of Surrealism, Man Ray, the relationship between photography and Surrealist texts, as well as the movement’s photographic experiments. Please note: this is indeed the original 1985 edition, ISBN 2-85850-331-1, and not the 2002 Hazan reprint bearing the visible ISBN 2-85025-797-4 on some more recent copies. Condition: good overall condition. Interior appears fresh and well-preserved, as shown in the photographs. Dust jacket present, with fairly numerous scratches and scuffs on the back cover, some signs of wear, and minor damage to the edges; the front cover is in significantly better condition. Binding and book block appear sturdy.
