L. Da Ponte - Nuovo Compendio di Meditazioni - 1856-1859

ew Compendium of Meditations by Padre Luigi da Ponte Corrected and improved, reduced by Father Nicola Frison. Italian version from French by Aurelio Casini, retired captain of the Royal Tuscan Artillery Corps. Florence, at the publisher's expense, 1856-1859. 4 volumes in 2 volumes (Vol. I-II and Vol. III-IV). Contemporary binding in half parchment or boards with leather/parchment spine, gold titles on red inlays ("DA PONTE MEDITAZIONI") and green ("VOL. I-II" / "VOL. III-IV"), marbled paper sides. Dimensions: about 180 × 115 mm. Pages: Vol. I pp. 320; Vol. II pp. 332; Vol. III pp. 224 + 106; Vol. IV pp. 194. Complete with all 4 title pages. This is a practical compendium of the famous Meditations of the venerable Father Luis de la Puente S.J. (Valladolid 1554 – 1624), one of the most important Jesuit mystics and spiritual writers of the Spanish Golden Age. The original work (Meditaciones de los misterios de nuestra santa fe) is a classic of Ignatian spirituality. Father Nicola Frison (or Frizon) S.J. prepared a reduction and methodological reorganization, arranging a specific meditation for each day of the liturgical year (with three reflection points), enriched by meditations on saints and feasts. The present is the Italian version, translated from French by Captain Aurelio Casini. The text offers daily meditations on the life of Christ, the mysteries of faith, the Passion, the Resurrection, the Virgin, the saints, and ascetic themes (providence, the glory of the blessed, death, etc.), designed for the practice of mental prayer. Luigi da Ponte is a reference author in the Jesuit tradition; his works were widely diffused and reworked throughout Europe. This Florentine edition from the mid-nineteenth century represents one of the Italian versions of Frison's compendium, particularly useful for daily and pastoral use. Rare on the market: it does not frequently appear in Italian antique catalogs and bibliographies; the completeness of the four volumes with their respective title pages (1856, 1857, 1859, 1859), together with the original binding and the generally good state of preservation (with normal signs of use and period browning), add to its collectible interest, especially for enthusiasts of Jesuit spirituality, nineteenth-century religious books, and Tuscan bindings. A complete, well-preserved copy, suitable for collectors of ascetic texts and the history of Catholic spirituality.
