Large Haliotis Fulgens Shell with Vivid

Sea Shell on Artistic Base — This lot presents a magnificent specimen of Haliotis fulgens, commonly known as Green Abalone, from the waters off Santa Cruz, California. The shell, of considerable size, is expertly mounted on an elegant display base in dark wood and brass, transforming it from a natural history relic into a true sculpture. The most precious element is undoubtedly its inner surface, whose nacre displays an iridescence of exceptional intensity and beauty. The inside of the shell is a masterpiece of natural optics. The nacre catches light and refracts it into a shifting spectrum of colors that dance across its wavy surface. Dominant tones of peacock green and electric blue blend with shades of turquoise, violet, and silver, creating a hypnotic visual effect that changes with every angle. In the center, the imprint of the adductor muscle draws a more complex and almost botryoid texture, a fascinating detail that contrasts with the surrounding smoother, fluid areas, adding depth and character to the specimen. In sharp contrast with the glossy perfection of the interior, the exterior surface retains a rough and authentic appearance, a tangible testimony to the mollusk's life in the marine environment. Its robust texture is marked by concentric growth lines and the characteristic row of breathing holes, known as tremata, typical of the Haliotis genus. The presence of small marine encrustations, such as annelid worm tubes, only enhances its charm, confirming the natural origin and history of the specimen before its collection. Abalone is a marine gastropod whose shell is an extraordinary example of bio-mineralization. The iridescent inner layer, the nacre, consists of microscopic aragonite crystals cemented by an organic matrix. This layered structure, with a thickness comparable to the wavelength of light, splits white light through interference and diffraction, generating the play of colors we so admire. The specimen thus stands at the threshold between biology and mineralogy. In addition to its indisputable scientific interest, this piece qualifies as a sophisticated decorative object. Its presentation on a minimal and modern base makes it ideal for enriching a bookshelf, a professional study, or a corner of a contemporary interior. It is a perfect Naturalia specimen for a modern Wunderkammer or 'cabinet of curiosities,' an object capable of evoking the beauty of the ocean and stimulating curiosity, representing a perfect dialogue between natural form and design.
