Large Vintage Heart Pendant with Rubies & Diamonds in Gold, c. 1985

This magnificent pendant from the 1980s is designed in the shape of a heart. 51 intense red rubies and 53 fine diamonds are set in warm, shiny, high-carat yellow gold. The gemstones are not set at random, but are embedded in the slightly curved surface in a sophisticated arrangement: Ruby and diamond alternate regularly and form a chessboard-like pattern. This interplay not only emphasizes the bright red of the rubies, but also lends the pendant a special tension - its entire surface sparkles. The pendant reflects the style of an era in which jewellery was not just an ornament, but an expression of personality and self-confidence. Jewelry from the 1980s is still fascinating today as an impressive testimony to a time of optimism and abundance: the oil crisis seemed to have been overcome and Wall Street was flourishing. At the same time, a new image of women prevailed: self-confident and strong, women asserted themselves in professional life, wore broad shoulder pads, high heels - and adorned themselves with eye-catching rings, necklaces and brooches in unprecedented dimensions - with shiny gold surfaces and lavish gemstone trimmings. We found the pendant, which we added a gold chain to, here in Berlin. Is the chessboard made of gemstones perhaps a tongue-in-cheek allusion to being successful in both love and games? Luck in the game and luck in love? Who knows!
