Circa 1900. Cristallerie Legras / Montjoye in St Denis. France Magnificent and rare large Legras vase model listed as “Philippe” (ref. 4465 P), standing just over 30 cm high with a generous volume, remarkable for the elegance of its silhouette, the exceptional intensity of its royal blue background, and the richness of its sumptuous polychrome enamel floral decoration enhanced with gold. Made in blown glass, this impressive glassware features a particularly original and harmonious form: a generously widened and slightly flared base rises progressively into a long conical body with soft lines, before subtly narrowing and then blossoming into an astonishing hexagonal neck. The contrast between the sensuous curves of the belly and the geometric construction of the opening gives the piece a silhouette that is powerful, elegant and surprisingly modern. But it is undoubtedly its decoration that gives it all its character. On an extraordinary deep royal blue background, almost cobalt under certain lighting, blooms a superb naturalistic composition of large dahlias with long sinuous stems. The flowers, widely opened, are delicately painted in a subtle harmony of opaline white, pale pink, powder pink and pale yellow, while their hearts, generously enhanced with gold, catch the light and illuminate the depth of the blue glass. The long mint-green stems rise gracefully from the base and are accompanied by broad cut leaves, shaded with different greens and olive. They give the whole piece a remarkable upward movement, guiding the viewer’s eye naturally to the large flower that dominates the composition. However, the décor is not limited to a simple frontal scene: it truly hugs and follows the volume of the vase. The stems cross, the leaves unfold, and the flowers appear successively as the piece is rotated, giving the composition a beautiful continuity and a sense of living vegetation growing freely around the glassware. Around these large flowers develops a second, infinitely more delicate decorative register: numerous grasses finely traced in gold speckle the deep blue like tiny wild herbs. They are accompanied by remarkable gold motifs composed of an irregular network of small cells, evoking at times a precious mosaic, a lattice or a fragmented lace. This alternation between the large polychrome floral masses and the almost graphic finesse of the small golden ornaments gives the piece exceptional richness without ever overloading its composition. The upper part alone constitutes a true piece of decorative virtuosity. The spectacular hexagonal collar is entirely outlined by a wide gold frieze. Geometric diamonds rhythm the perimeter of the opening while magnificent festooned motifs unfold, evoking a lace of gold, punctuated by knots, meshes and delicate garlands of hanging roses. This sumptuous frieze acts almost as a jewelry crowning the vase. It creates, above all, a particularly successful contrast with the freedom of the lower decoration: the large flowers that seem to grow spontaneously from the base are answered at the top by a cleverly ordered and almost architectural ornamentation. Nature rises freely along the vase before meeting, at the neck, a true gold lace. The choice of the blue background fully contributes to the beauty of the whole. Deep and luminous at the same time, visually oscillating between royal blue and intense cobalt depending on the thickness of the glass and the incidence of light, it forms a spectacular setting for the pastel enamels and metallic highlights. The whites and pinks of the dahlias thus acquire a pearly softness while gold literally gleams on the surface of the glass. All in all, it is a magnificent illustration of Art Nouveau aesthetics, where nature is no longer merely used as a decorative motif but becomes an integral part of the creation of the object: the stems accompany the vase’s curves, the flowers regulate its height, and the foliage underlines its movement. In good condition for its great age, with fresh and thick enamel and bright colors. Note just a few minor wear from normal gilding wear at the top of the neck and a discreet small glaze/cooking defect, or air bubble, quite common on the interior, as well as some old signs of use inside the vase, perfectly coherent with the passage of time and the piece’s antiquity — let us remind that this vase is now over 125 years old! This magnificent and impressive early 20th-century Art Nouveau vase is today a piece that is as decorative as it is rare, whose extraordinary depth of royal blue, the freshness of the enamels, and the brilliance of the gold highlights will not fail to attract attention and arouse the admiration of your guests! Very beautiful collection piece from the Art Nouveau period of the Nancy School. Daum Nancy era, Gallé, Le verre Français, Schneider, Lalique... DUE TO AN INCREASE IN UNPAID LOTS...
