Lionel Derimais Fog in the Streets of New York, c. 1980 Late silver gelatin print, 40 x 50 cm (margins included) Lionel Derimais is a French documentary photographer known for his street and reportage work carried out notably in New York, Tokyo, London, Beijing and several Asian countries. He studied photography at the International Center of Photography in the early 1980s. His work is characterized by a humane, documentary approach, attentive to daily life and social transformations. Among his most notable series are: • New York 1980, a documentary of the city before its gentrification, made during his study stay in New York. • Tokyo Subway 1987, devoted to Tokyo subway riders and published by Café Royal Books. • Cultural Evolution: China 2005-2010, a study of the changes in Chinese society around and after the Beijing Olympic Games. His photographs have been published in many international media, including The New York Times, Le Monde, Paris Match and El País.
