A Handsome Mid-Grade Lazy Deuce from Pennsylvania Lock Haven, Pennsylvania. $2 Original. Fr. 387a. First NB. Charter #507. PMG Very Fine 30 Net. Repaired, Toned. Predating 1874 owing to the lack of overprinted charter numbers, this mid-grade Original Series $2 is nonetheless a sight to behold. Here one may look upon elements of this design that have made it a long-standing favorite of collectors while apparent originality can be found throughout. Elements such as distinct penned signatures attributable to Cashier Gravenstine Kintzing and President Tench C. Kintzing may also be noticed, but they only serve to scratch the surface of what makes this note a remarkable item in the overall calculus. Looking left, part of that very calculus becomes clear thanks to the vignette known as Stars and Stripes while another part is revealed by the engraved horizontal "2" protector responsible for the "Lazy Deuce" moniker breathlessly repeated by auction catalogs and numismatic reference material. Another part is nonetheless brought to form by another albeit non-traditional venue reflected by the comments applied by PMG. The reasoning behind the "Repaired" comment speaks to some well-executed work along the left margin while the "Toned" comment is arguably secondary when held against the fact this example is one of just two pieces recorded for the type and denomination on this bank by the National Bank Note Census. PMG comments "Repaired, Toned." Estimate: $5,000 - $7,000. Click here for certification details from PMG.
