He became particularly well known as a key member of the legendary “Showtime Lakers” of the 1980s. Cooper stood out for his exceptional defense, versatility, and his ability to neutralize the opponent’s best offensive players. His entire NBA career (1978–1990) was spent with the Los Angeles Lakers, where he, together with Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and James Worthy, formed one of the most successful teams in NBA history. With the Lakers he won a total of five NBA championships (1980, 1982, 1985, 1987, and 1988) and was an important part of the team as a defensive specialist as well as a reliable long-range shooter.
