About the photographer: Ted Streshinsky (1923 - 2003), a Kensington-born photojournalist who documented the turbulent 1960s sweep, from the Black Panthers to anti-war protests. In many respects, Mr. Streshinsky lived his life on the front lines of history. As a freelancer who created photo essays for Time, Life, Look and other magazines, Mr. Streshinsky photographed Cesar Chavez, Janis Joplin, the Black Panthers, Ken Kesey and four American presidents. In the 1960s, he documented the movement for freedom of expression, anti-Vietnam War protests and the People’s Park riots in Berkeley. His assignments took him around the world, from documenting a two-week royal wedding in Tonga to attending the funeral of a girl in Samoa. “He witnessed all sorts of things, in all sorts of places,” said Ben Bagdikian, former dean of the UC Berkeley School of Journalism who, as a writer, worked with Mr. Streshinsky for the Saturday Evening Post. “There are very few places in the world he hasn’t photographed, except Antarctica.” About the artist: Born a trumpet player, Louis Armstrong wore more than one hat as he became also a talented singer. His sense of innovation and improvisation gave jazz a new breath, now expressed with a trumpet, that of the most influential jazz singer of his generation. "What we play is life." These words of Louis Armstrong foreshadow the reach of his art. An art he paradoxically discovered in the reform school where he was placed after being arrested for possession of a weapon. He was about twelve when he joined the center’s band, through which he discovered the drum, which he eventually abandoned for the cornet. Joe “King” Oliver then took him under his wing and found him his first contracts. Buoyed by this experience, he left for Chicago where he joined the Creole Jazz Band. Their collaboration lasted until 1924, when his wife, pianist Lil Hardin, urged him to go to New York, where he joined the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra. Alongside his childhood friend Clarence Williams, he recorded many tracks. But it was on his return to Chicago that Louis Armstrong’s career, having moved from cornet to trumpet, took on a new dimension. Satchmo or the man with the mouthbag He led the Hot Five (which became the Hot Seven in 1927 with the addition of a drum and a tuba) with which he recorded "Potato Head Blues" or "Muggles," which became jazz standards in an America still full of racism, yet where Armstrong’s trumpets rang out in fame. The artist, who even funded some campaigns of Martin Luther King, infused a new sound through exceptional solos. His reputation and charisma allowed him to surround himself with a small Neo-New Orleans outfit. With Earl Hines, Jack Teagarden, Barney Bigard and Sidney Catlett, he notably performed at the Nice festival in 1948. There one discovers a new style, scat, a savory blend of onomatopoeia and alliteration ("bop be doo bop bam boum bebop boo"). The jazzman then undertook tours in Sweden and France, and appeared in cinema, notably in "Glory Alley" (1952) by Raoul Walsh as well as in "Paris Blues" (1961) with Paul Newman. His passion remains jazz, which he relentlessly reinvents, notably with the All Stars, always with Barney Bigard and the trombonist Trummy Young. He also sings "Blu Berry Hill," with Gordon Jenkins, or "Mack the Knife." Countless titles that bear witness, as Louis Armstrong said, that "to know how to play, one must love." A guiding principle that abruptly ended on July 6, 1971 in New York.
