Alle Auktionen / Kunst und Drucke / Louis Haché - 1 Original page - Louis Haché - Les incursions des Vikings

This original ink drawing by Louis Haché fully fits his activity as a realistic and didactic comic-book illustrator, particularly important in the first part of his career. Before devoting himself more to painting, Haché worked as an illustrator, graphic designer and advertising designer, while collaborating on several publications, notably Tintin, La Libre Belgique and Éditions du Lombard. The plate presented here is taken from The Adventures of the Belgians and is devoted to the incursions of the Vikings. It traces the major stages of the Scandinavian invasions in western Europe starting from the 9th century, emphasizing the power and speed of the Viking ships as well as the scale of their expeditions. A map notably recalls their incursions into the Atlantic and as far as North America. The narrative then discusses the first attacks against the Flemish coasts, notably that of 820, followed by raids that grew increasingly violent. The scenes show the populations confronted by pillage and destruction, as well as monasteries set on fire and the religious forced to flee. Faced with this threat, the inhabitants seek protection from counts, dukes and local authorities, leading to the construction of fortifications and castles in strategic positions. The last part of the plate evokes Arnulf of Carinthia’s victory over the Vikings in 891, on the banks of the Dyle, while underscoring the gradual weakening of the Carolingian power and the strengthening of local authorities. Viking incursions are thus presented as a major military event, but also as one of the factors in the political and social transformations of medieval Europe. Haché’s graphical work attests to his concern for documentary accuracy. The drakkars, weapons, costumes, buildings and scenes of fighting are depicted with great care. The strong contrasts of line art enhance the dramatic character of the scenes of pillage and fire, while maps and captions convey historical information clearly and accessibly. This plate thus perfectly illustrates Haché’s ability to combine narration, historical documentation and spectacle. Through a sequence of dynamic images and explanatory texts, he turns a complex episode of medieval history into a visually immediate narrative, characteristic of his work in historical and didactic comics.
