Louis Haché - Visages de femmes

These pencil drawings by Louis Haché (1922-2013) form a set of female portrait studies created in the early 1990s. The eight sheets depict young women with varied framing and poses: full face, three-quarter view, or slightly profile. Despite these pose differences, the set shows a strong stylistic unity, based on precise drawing and particular attention given to the eyes and expressions. born in Ixelles, Louis Haché led a highly varied career, between illustration, comics, and painting. After working as a graphic designer and advertising illustrator, he became independent in 1953 and collaborated notably with the Tintin newspaper, La Libre Belgique, Éditions du Lombard, and Éditions Marabout. He gradually devoted himself to painting, exclusively from 1974 onward. His long experience in drawing and illustration is evident here in the mastery of line and in the meticulous construction of faces. Facial features are shaped by fine hatching, highlights, and subtle shading effects, while hairstyles and clothing are often treated in a freer, more spontaneous manner. The portrait occupies an important place in Haché’s production. He especially used gouache for his early portraits, then charcoal, sanguine, and pencil for his studies of nudes and faces. In this set, he explores less the psychological individuality of the models and more the variations of attitudes, hairstyles, looks, and expressions. The care given to the eyes, mouth, and the modeling of the face nevertheless grants each figure a singular presence. Thus this ensemble bears witness to the more intimate and experimental dimension of Louis Haché’s graphic work, at the boundary between portrait study and illustration. The precise realism of the drawing is combined here with a search for softness, elegance, and idealization, particularly evident in the treatment of the female faces.
