Louis Leblanc. New method of operating hernias. Paris, Guillyn, 1768, xv-477 pp. A volume in-8 (200x120 mm), full calf, spine with raised bands ornately decorated, red morocco title piece, red edges (binding of the period). Wear and rubbing on the covers and spine. Interior fresh, rare foxing. Original edition to which an Essay on rare and little-known hernias by Jean-Jacques-Louis Hoin is added; well complete with the two folding plates. In this treatise, Le Blanc presents a new operative method for the treatment of hernias, the fruit of sixteen years of observation and clinical experience. He criticizes the surgical techniques then in use, which he deems too dangerous, and proposes a more conservative approach based on the progressive reduction of the hernia through dilatation and pressure maneuvers (taxis), limiting as much as possible the need for incision. The work is enriched with numerous clinical cases, letters from surgeons, and opinions from learned academies discussing or supporting his method, making it an important testimony of eighteenth-century French surgery.
