Louis-Sébastien Mercier - L'an deux mille quatre cent quarante

Rare edition of this science fiction novel and philosophical utopia that imagines the tale of an eighteenth-century man who falls asleep and is then projected into a distant future where society has been profoundly transformed by the progress of the Enlightenment, reason, and social reforms - The work takes the form of a fictional time-travel journey in which the narrator discovers a civilization of the 25th century freed from many injustices of its era, which allows Mercier to offer a direct and often virulent critique of the political, religious, and social institutions of Ancien Régime France - In this idealized future, the absolute monarchy has disappeared in favor of a more rational and equitable government, laws are simplified and oriented toward the common good, education is generalized and founded on the principles of reason, morality, and social usefulness - Louis-Sébastien Mercier - L'an deux mille quatre cent quarante.
