Seriously wounded in the Zulu Wars when receiving a stab wound to the chest in close quarter fighting, having to pull a spear from his chest. Left for dead it was his Batman 'Sparks' who found him in the dark after the battle. A slow recovery followed in time for him to be active 'in his war' the Boer War. He retired from the Army in 1902 leaving the Reserve in 1909. During the Great War he served as an Intelligence Officer, the Silver War Badge perhaps suggesting he was not sufficiently fit to continue serving.
