Luigi Tagliani (c.1800-?) - Paesaggio

Luigi Tagliani (c.1800-?) - Paesaggio

Suggestive landscape by Luigi Tagliani, depicting a wayfarer accompanied by a pack animal along a path immersed in a scenic nature, among trees, rocks, and waterways. The composition develops around the two central figures, framed by slanted trees and vegetation in autumn tones. On the right, a waterfall descends among the rocks and feeds the stream in the foreground; small rustic buildings, an elevated wooden structure, and a boat complete the scene, giving it a narrative character. The palette alternates greens and blues with warm ochre and brown accents. The overcast sky and the contrasts between illuminated areas and shadows create an intense and evocative atmosphere, while the brushstrokes emphasize the movement of the water and the details of the vegetation. Signature at the bottom right, accompanied by a further inscription underneath. On the back of the canvas there is a handwritten note with the artist’s name and the designation “Landscape.” The painting is presented in a wide black frame with gold profiles, included in the sale. The frame shows signs of wear, abrasions, and small losses of finish. The photographs are an integral part of the description and document the visible condition of the work. Luigi Tagliani (Capolago, c. 1800) Swiss painter active in Italy in the first half of the nineteenth century. He trained at the Brera Academy in Milan, where he won drawing prizes (1814, 1816), and continued his studies at the Academy of Florence. He painted genre scenes, sacred and historic subjects, in an academic style with a classicist influence. In 1820 he won the first prize at the Parma Ducal Academy of Fine Arts competition with the work “Departure of Ovid banished by Augustus.” His production is documented in Switzerland and in private collections; he is present in the major art-market databases.
