Magnificent old set of 14 volumes, comprising 13 numbered volumes and an independent atlas, housed in very elegant uniform bindings in red half-leather with corners, the backs richly adorned with gold tooling. An important 19th-century historical work, particularly appealing for the quality of its bindings and the richness of its illustrated atlas. Composition of the collection * Volumes I to XII: history of the Dukes of Burgundy. * Volume XIII: entirely devoted to the tables. * An independent atlas, unnumbered. Thus 14 physical volumes in total. A remarkable atlas of 57 illustrations The atlas constitutes one of the main interests of this set. It includes, according to the tally performed: * 35 portraits of historical figures. * 7 engravings depicting monuments and historical scenes. * 15 maps and plans, including 2 very large folding maps. Among them are representations of historical figures, maps of France, and plans of famous battles. The large folding maps are particularly impressive and give this set a real historical and cartographic interest. A major historical work Prosper de Barante (1782–1866), historian, diplomat, and member of the French Academy, traces the history of the Valois-Burgundy house from 1364 to 1477. The work covers in particular the reigns of Philip the Bold, John the Fearless, Philip the Good, and Charles the Bold. This vast historical fresco evokes the rivalries between Burgundy and the crown of France, the political and military conflicts, as well as the great figures of the late Middle Ages. Edition and bibliographical particulars Ancient edition published by Ladvocat between 1824 and 1826, during the period of the first publications of this work. The collection presents different printings, including Volume XII explicitly bearing the note “Third Edition.” It is therefore presented as an old set from the period of the original edition, without being advertised as entirely from the first printing. Superb old bindings The 14 volumes feature handsome uniform bindings in red half-leather with corners, with marbled boards. The spines are richly decorated with gold-tooled motifs and blind tooling, with green spine labels. The set offers a very handsome library presentation and a remarkable visual harmony. State of preservation Very good overall condition for a set dating from about two centuries ago. The bindings are solid, elegant and well preserved, with light signs of wear related to their age. The interiors are clean and well preserved, with some foxing and natural browning. The atlas is also very well preserved. The illustrations and the large maps are in good overall condition. Two small localized reinforcements on the white tape are to be noted in the atlas. The entire set of 57 illustrations has been tallied. Their exact conformity to the bibliographic collation of the edition remains to be confirmed.
