Fascinating exemplar of this masterpiece of ecclesiastical and military history. It presents to you the Knights Hospitaller of Saint John of Jerusalem, a brother-knights order whose mission has been devoted to protecting pilgrims and fighting the infidels - This seventh volume marks a turning point in Vertot's fresco, recounting the transition of the Hospitaller Order from Rhodes to Malta, and describing the great campaigns, the diplomatic negotiations and the sieges that seal this strategic migration - Vertot, faithful to his dramatic and oratorical style, magnifies the figures of the grand masters and of the captains, while exposing the internal tensions linked to rivalries of command and to the disciplinary reforms necessary to maintain spiritual and military unity - The narrative emphasizes the order's double vocation: a military bastion of Christendom and an hospital institution devoted to the poor and the sick, which gives the history a spiritual as well as heroic dimension - This Tome VII participates in the construction of a collective memory where the Order of Malta is seen as a model of bravery, discipline and religious fidelity, nourishing the European imagination with a chivalry that is both military and spiritual, while foreshadowing the future centrality of Malta in the history of the order - M. L'Abbé De Vertot - History of the Hospitaller Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, called since the Knights of Rhodes, and today Knights of Malta - 1753 - Tome VII - J. F. Quillau, Son - -> 443 pages Good condition of the binding, the work in its full tawny marmoed calf of the period, wear from use, heads and corners worn, red edges, spine with gold-tooled ornaments, titling and volume number gilded on a piece of red morocco, cold-pressed lines framing the covers - Good interior condition, light stains, worm galleries at the foot of the volume, pretty headpieces, lovely drop cap, tailpieces, work containing a complete list of the knights, in alphabetical order, marbled endpapers - Delivery service assured within a few days –
