Magnificent Art Deco Brooch in Platinum and Diamonds, c. 1930

Hardly any other era is as closely associated with the brilliance of platinum and diamonds as the Art Deco period. In the 1920s, the combination of this cool precious metal and bright gemstones became the very epitome of glamorous elegance. With its strength, platinum was ideally suited for the delicate designs of those years. A particularly beautiful example of this is the brooch presented here, dating from around 1930. The elongated piece of jewellery is crafted entirely from platinum and features a strictly symmetrical design. The design radiates outward from the center toward the stepped sides. Straight and diagonal sections, densely set with diamonds, interlock to form a sequence of geometric shapes. Finely serrated shadow gaps and milgrains further enliven the design. These contrasting forms create a strong internal dynamic. A total of 71 old-cut, octagonal, and rose cut diamonds cover nearly the entire front. The different cuts create a lively interplay of light reflections. Larger diamonds serve as focal points in the center and on the sides, while numerous small stones trace the geometric lines. The platinum remains almost invisible and serves primarily as a framework for the stones. Such elongated diamond brooches and “bar pins” were among the most popular types of jewellery in the 1920s. Contemporary catalogs feature them in great variety. Our brooch is firmly rooted in this tradition. With its cool white hue, austere geometry, and lavish diamond setting, it embodies the glamour of Art Deco like no other piece of jewellery.
