Pierre de Marca (1594–1662) was a French bishop and historian. As a collection of smaller writings by the influential Archbishop of Paris and a forerunner of Gallicanism, the work bundles theological and legal-historical treatises on the independence of the French church from Rome. In addition to politically sensitive ecclesiastical texts, the volume contains rare national and local historical studies, such as a detailed treatise on the Catalan monastery Montserrat. It is regarded as an indispensable primary source for the study of French absolutism and the church-state relationship in the 17th century.
