Marcus de Vestele (1941-2024) - Composition Cobra vers 1975 - huile sur toile

Marcus de Vestele (1941-2024) Composition Cobra circa 1975 Oil on canvas Signature: Not signed on the front. Atelier stamp on the back, on the frame: “Marcus de Vestele – Atelier de l’artiste” Dimensions: 89.5 × 60.5 cm Sold unframed Condition: Good overall studio condition. An accident visible on the right edge: a small perforation of the paint layer, visible in the photos. Some small signs of wear, without affecting legibility. Canvas stretched on its original frame, with a central crossbar. Provenance: Artist’s studio of Marcus de Vestele. Description: Oil by Marcus de Vestele, circa 1975. Large horizontal format, held between a light mass on the left and a standing figure on the right. On the left, a large volume of yellow, cream and ochre, almost reclined: broad brushstroke, open surface, a dark accent that acts as an eye. In the center, two vertical brown and black strokes, cut by reds, separate the two masses without closing them. On the right, a white shape rises, outlined in black: sketchy head, open body, a red block above like a roof or a sign. The background remains a blue-gray sky, broadly brushed, never defined. The gesture is that of Cobra: calligraphic line, decisive flats, figure barely contained, tension between landscape and human presence. The colors, yellow, white, red, black, ochre, structure the space without enclosing it. A characteristic piece of Marcus de Vestele’s painted production from the mid-1970s, directly from the workshop. Biography: Marcus de Vestele (1941-2024) is a Belgian artist recognized first as a marble sculptor, notably in Carrara and in the Bardiglio. At the same time, he pursued throughout his life a pictorial production long kept in the studio, now sought after. Strongly influenced by Cobra (Karel Appel, Asger Jorn, Pierre Alechinsky, Corneille, Constant), he retains the rough figure, spontaneous line, and the tension between body and abstraction. This oil from the 1970s is a clear example: large format, broad gesture, color that sustains the figure more than the drawing.
