Marcus de Vestele (1941-2024) Three Figures, 1964 Oil on canvas Signature: Signed bottom left: Marcus 64 Dimensions: 65 × 55 cm Sold unframed Condition: Overall good. Canvas stretched on original frame, with a central crossbar. A few rare surface accidents, not affecting readability. Reversed side, small canvas reinforcement. Paint thick, material preserved. Provenance: Studio of the artist Marcus de Vestele. Description: Oil from 1964 by Marcus de Vestele. Three seated figures, squeezed into a dark field. On the left, an inverted profile, a light face cut by a red accent, body extended in deep blue and a seat of red. In the center, a yellow head, almost mask-like, open torso of green, ochre and red. On the right, a third figure, straighter, light hair, dark dress intersected by a bright red. The background is not a setting: broad strokes of black, greens, ochres and a red line at the top, closing the space like a low-ceilinged room. The color does not describe; it holds the bodies. Thick brushstrokes on faces and hands, drier backgrounds, scratched in places. Swift gesture, figures barely held, typical of the primitive figurative style favored by Cobra. Rare piece from Marcus de Vestele’s painted production in 1964, well before the 1970s papers, directly from the studio. Biography: Marcus de Vestele (1941-2024) was a Belgian artist recognized first as a marble sculptor, notably in Carrara and in Bardiglio. Concurrently, he maintained throughout his life a pictorial production that remained in the studio for a long time, now sought after. Strongly influenced by Cobra (Karel Appel, Asger Jorn, Pierre Alechinsky, Corneille, Constant), he retains the rustic figure, spontaneous stroke and the tension between body and abstraction. This 1964 oil is an early example: charged material, somber palette, three presences held more by color than by drawing.
