Alle Auktionen / Sonstige / Mariano Montoya (1950) - Cotilleos en el mercado
Artist: Mariano Montoya (Tomelloso, Ciudad Real, 1950) Technique: Oil on canvas Signature: Signed in the lower right corner (M. Montoya) Era / Period: Second half of the 20th century (c. 1980–1990) Style: Realism Theme: Costumbrismo / Genre scene / Popular figures Framed: Classical gold wooden frame, richly carved with vegetal motifs and an inner molding in burgundy / mahogany tone. Description of the work: Notable oil painting on canvas with costumbrista (19th-century-inspired) influence that stages a lively everyday scene in a popular market or rustic courtyard. In the center of the scene, a young peasant woman wearing a mantón, jubón and traditional skirt holds a basket while conversing with a fruit seller or greengrocer leaning beside a stall overflowing with vegetables, wicker baskets and garden produce. To the right, a third female figure advances carrying a large earthen jug, completing a dynamic composition rich in narrative details. The work stands out for the rigorous academic drawing of the figures, meticulous handling of traditional textiles, and the successful recreation of organic textures (vegetables, wicker, pottery and stone). The background, framed by a large rustic archway that reveals the sunny outdoors, creates a deep sense of volume and lighting balance characteristic of Spanish genre painting. Overall dimensions: 124x97 cm Canvas dimensions: 100x73 cm Biography and artistic career: Mariano Montoya was born in 1950 in Tomelloso (Ciudad Real), a land with a notable artistic tradition. Self-taught by training, he stood out from his beginnings for a natural virtuosity, a clean brushstroke, and an extraordinary capacity for drawing and academic composition. Throughout his career he has masterfully cultivated figurative painting, especially in the orientalists genre, 18th-century gallant scenes, traditional costumbrismo, and depictions of majas and carnival scenes. His Orientalist work connects fully with the aesthetic tradition of the 19th and early 20th centuries, characterized by meticulous detailing, careful archaeological and textile recreation of costumes, tapestries and carpets, as well as a remarkable mastery of transparencies, glazes and chiaroscuro. Reserved in character and distant from the mass commercial self-promotion circuits, Montoya focused his career on the rigor of the workshop and selective production. His paintings are common and highly valued in the secondary market and in Spanish and international auction rooms (such as Durán, Subastas Segre, Aletheia or Templum Fine Art), where his large Orientalist compositions and period scenes achieve notable recognition for their decorative value and refined technical quality.
