Explanation: in cel animation, the maker draws the moving parts of the animation on transparent sheets, or "cels." 24 cels are needed for one second of a cartoon. The advantage is that fewer drawings are needed, because the cels with the same movement can be reused. At the beginning of the last century, cel animation was invented in America. Animation became a market product thanks to Walt Disney that had to be produced quickly. To save time, the technique was devised in which the moving parts and the non-moving parts of the drawing could be separated from each other. The animation is first drawn in pencil (line drawing) and then placed on a clear transparent sheet (cel). Because of the transparency, multiple layers can be worked over one another. On 1 December 2010 the cultural heritage of Marten Toonder (all work that Marten Toonder himself made) was officially transferred by the heirs to the Letterkundig Museum Leiden and has since then thus been owned by the Dutch State. In November 2018 the archive of the Marten Toonder Studios was donated to the Literatuurmuseum in The Hague and the Eye Filmmuseum in Amsterdam. See the last photo. Due to the above developments, the chance is excluded that any original work by Marten Toonder himself and by Marten Toonder Studios will be offered "in the market" from this estate. This drawing (preserved, because a lot of material was destroyed at the time) was made by Marten Toonder Studios and used for the film "Als je begrijpt wat ik bedoel".
