Côte d'Ivoire Baoulé Bois Hauteur : 410mm Largeur : 200mm Profondeur : 100mm This disk mask is a very particular type of mask, called the moon mask or Kple Kple mask. It comes from the Baoulé people (and more precisely from sub-groups that have assimilated Wan traditions), a major ethnic group of Côte d'Ivoire. 1. Stylistic and Aesthetic Characteristics The style of this mask is deliberately minimalist, abstract, and geometric, in strong contrast with the usual realism of Baoulé anthropomorphic masks: • The facial disk: The main part of the mask takes the shape of an almost perfect, flat disk. The rim is adorned with a frieze of engraved triangles highlighted with light pigments (kaolin). • The simplified features: The eyes are represented by two prominent circles surrounded by a light almond-shaped area, and the mouth is a simple relief rectangle, fitted with small schematic teeth. • The horns: The top of the disk is crowned with two large curved horns that meet at their tips, referring to a horned animal (buffalo or antelope). • The back and patina: At the back, the structure is hollowed to accommodate the face, revealing a rectangular slit at the mouth level to allow the wearer to see or breathe. Side openings for attaching the costume are also visible. The front face shows a beautiful brown patina nuanced by remnants of pigments. 2. Ritual Use and Function: The Goli Dance The Kple Kple mask plays a fundamental introductory role in a grand festival of joy and mourning called the Goli, a Wan-origin dance adopted by the Baoulé: • The role of the "child": In the hierarchy of the four pairs of masks that appear successively during the day of the Goli, the Kple Kple (which exists in a black "male" version and a red "female" version) always appears first. It embodies minor spirits, young boys or undisciplined children. • The announcement of major masks: The wearer of this mask runs and dances in a lively, agile, and sometimes facetious manner in the village square. Its aim is to entertain the crowd, but above all to purify the sacred space and to announce the progressive arrival of the much larger and more sacred masks of the day, such as the buffalo masks (Goli Glen) or the portrait masks (Mblo). • A social and spiritual link: Out for funeral rites of notable people or to entertain the village during major agricultural celebrations, it helps dissipate negative forces and strengthen the community's cohesion in the face of the invisible. Packages are shipped Monday through Saturday with insurance and a tracking number. Delivery in 1 to 3 days in France via Chronopost, 2 to 5 days across the European Union.
