Maties Palau Ferré (1921-200) - Mujer-Paloma

Lithography in generally good condition; a small flaw is that one corner is slightly bent, barely noticeable when framed. From Montblanc born in Barcelona of the Fine Arts Born in Montblanc in 1921, Maties Palau Ferré comes from a family linked to crafts and commerce of the Vila Ducal. Since childhood Palau Ferré has been drawn to art and thus earns early recognitions in several school drawing awards. Biografía de Maties Palau Ferré In the forties, Palau Ferré makes the move to postwar Barcelona, studies at the School of Fine Arts Sant Jordi and meets the artistic circles of the Catalan capital. His is a rising name of the fifties: we find his works in group exhibitions of Barcelona at the time such as the Autumn 1951 Fine Arts Exhibition and the Spring 1953, and he participates in four consecutive editions of one of the main showcases of art of la4-9, the Salons of Artists of la4-9. In 1956, at the prestigious Sala Gaspar, his first solo exhibition of painting and ceramics takes place. Palau Ferré in Paris during 1957, period of his training at the École des Beaux-Arts Barcelona, Madrid, London and Paris Maties Palau Ferré has made a name for himself in 1950s Barcelona and 1957 marks a turning point in his career. Throughout 1957, Palau Ferré exhibits at the Ateneo de Madrid, in a notable show from which he meets the cultural world of the Manzanares city. Also that year the artist participates in a collective exhibition at the National Book in London, which already illustrates the international projection Palau Ferré would have throughout his career. Also, in 1957 Palau Ferré takes the step to Paris, funded by a government grant. In the European cultural capital, where he will live until the early sixties, the painter broadens his training at the École des Beaux-Arts. From the Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris, Palau Ferré delves into international currents of art and shows his works in exhibitions at the Grand Palais, the Galería Tedesco, the Galería Paul Cézanne and the Salon de Nice. It is in Paris where he becomes interested in sculpture, through the Hungarian sculptor László Szabó. The great projects Work of Maties Palau Ferré In the early sixties Palau Ferré considers that Paris has already given him all he wished, so the artist settles again in Catalonia. It will be from the studio built in his native Montblanc that Palau Ferré will project the figurative art that characterizes him so much. There, in his pictorial paradise, journalists, admirers and art collectors visit him, as reflected in the chronicles and interviews in Palau Ferré published by numerous press outlets. Thus, it becomes common to read articles about his painting in Diario de Barcelona, Noticiero Universal, Destino or Correo Catalán, where his paintings would illustrate covers and special dates. Those are years of large projects, added to those he carried out during his Barcelona period. The ceramic Way of the Cross at the Vallfogona de Riucorb spa; the paintings of the chapel of the fortified house of Can Coll, in Lliçà de Vall; the singular landscape of Igualada for the Hotel América, and the sculpture of the Sagrada Família for the façade of the novitiate in the Seu d'Urgell, are some examples. From Montblanc to Syracuse After the great projects of the fifties and sixties, in 1970 there is a major exhibition of the artist in Madrid, which consecrates his career. The National Library thus enjoys the spring paintings full of colors conceived by Palau Ferré. The following year, in 1971, Syracuse University and the Everson Museum of New York organize a commemoration to celebrate Picasso’s 90th anniversary. For the American homage, they ask Palau Ferré, as the only invited painter, to create a painting for the event. Thus, after several sketches, Palau Ferré exhibited in the United States a very personal reinterpretation of Picasso’s Guernica. In the years when informalism and the path toward abstraction were very present in Catalan art, Palau Ferré remained faithful to a figurativism inspired by cubism. The painter who burned his canvases The contract the artist signs with a dealer obliges Palau Ferré to paint by square meters. The two parties fail to agree and the case ends up in court. In 1974 the Supreme Court reaffirms his condemnation. The artist, after painting and delivering the more than 40 square meters of oil painting established by the sentence, decides to stop exhibiting and burn his canvases. It is his way of reivindicating artists’ rights in a world of galleries, auctions and speculation. Can an artist be obliged to paint by square meters? As a result of his personal experience, Palau Ferré understands that the artist can also have a social function, contributing to a more just world. Thus, throughout his career, especially during the eighties and nineties, Palau Ferré collaborates on various social and cultural projects illustrating posters for several Amnesty International NGOs in the Catalan Federation of Social Volunteers, including Mundo Vivo, Ayuda en Acción or Manos Unidas. Moreover, Palau Ferré’s poster art also includes initiatives linked to his native Montblanc, with whom the artist always identifies. From the award that the artist conceived for the Josep and Liesel Vidal Peace Memorial, today we find a large mural of the artist on the facade of the first school of missionary Vicente Ferrer in Anantapur (India). An image that well encapsulates Palau Ferré’s commitment to peace, freedom, solidarity, cooperation, and the defense of Human Rights. Exhibiting again In 1989, Maties Palau Ferré breaks the artistic silence and returns to exhibit, after so many years. Tarragona is the city chosen to show his renewed Chinese inks with intense chromaticism. In Tarragona the artist feels good and has family and friends. Those gray years of flames, ashes and disillusion are long gone. The support he received from people and organizations, as well as a crucial farewell lunch from the Aulas de Arte Iberoamericanas in 1984, convince him. Thus the artist begins a new color-filled phase, where we can again enjoy his harlequins, the almond-eyed female figures, spring landscapes, still lifes and mythological and symbolic compositions. A singular artist The 1990s are full of art and projects. Palau Ferré is an internationally recognized artist who exhibits in the United States: at the Mechanicsburg Art Center in Pennsylvania or at the headquarters of the Organization of American States in Washington. In Catalonia, also in those years, several exhibitions dedicated to his work are held: at the Can Sisteré Contemporary Art Center in the Gothic courtyard of the Solsonès County Council. His last show will be at the Monastery Castle of Escornalbou. In addition, a tribute to the Museum of the History of Catalonia highlights the figure of an artist who felt very tied to Poblet Monastery. Palau Ferré passes away on January 1, 2000"}]} } {
