Alle Auktionen / Asiatische Kunst / Maya Copador Polychrome Bowl | Avian Motifs, Pseudoglyph Band
Pre-Columbian, Mesoamerica, Maya. A flaring-walled earthenware bowl painted in the Copador manner, its cream-buff slip carrying three abstracted avian creatures in iron-red and manganese brown. The birds unfurl across the exterior as curling beaks, hatched crests, and scrolling bodies, their forms dissolving into the calligraphic shorthand that distinguishes this ware from more literal Maya figural painting. A band of concentric circles, each a dot within a ring, runs beneath the exterior rim like a string of pseudoglyphs, while two red bands encircle the interior lip above a plain burnished ground. Bowls of this shape served as serving and presentation vessels in elite households across the southeastern Maya periphery, and many were ultimately placed in burials, where their decorated walls faced the deceased. Copador (a modern coinage from "Copan" and "Dorado") is the signature polychrome of the southeastern Maya frontier, produced chiefly in the Copan valley of Honduras and across western El Salvador during the Late Classic period. Its painters worked in a restricted palette of specular hematite red and dark brown over a pale slip, and favored swimmers, seated dignitaries, birds, and, above all, columns of pseudoglyphs: sequences that imitate the visual cadence of Maya hieroglyphic writing without spelling anything. The dot-in-circle band on this vessel belongs to that decorative-literate vocabulary. Copador's wide distribution, from Copan to Chalchuapa and beyond, makes it one of the clearest ceramic markers of exchange between the Maya heartland and its southeastern neighbors. Item # 204999
