The "Stella Matutina" Ring – Medieval/Early Modern Bronze Ring with Engraved Star Bezel – Ca. 14th–17th Century AD Description: A medieval to early modern bronze finger ring with a raised oval bezel engraved with a bold eight-rayed star, the field enclosed by a border of fine radiating hatching that makes the whole face seem to burn outward from its centre. The shoulders are ribbed and collared, rising from a broad, smoothly worn hoop. I have named this piece the "Stella Matutina" Ring — the Ring of the Morning Star — in the devotional idiom of its own age. Stella Matutina was one of the most beloved invocations of medieval Europe, the star that rises last in the night and announces the coming of the light. Its eight-rayed form appears everywhere from church carving to charm and amulet, and on a ring it was no mere ornament: worn on the hand, the morning star was carried as a promise that the dark ends, a guard for the traveller on the road before dawn and for the sleeper who feared what the night might bring. The radiating hatching around the rim is the maker's way of showing that light actually moving — an engraver making a small sun on a finger. Rings of this class were cast and finished by hand in provincial workshops across the Balkans, Anatolia and Central Europe, and were worn by farmers, soldiers, merchants and townspeople — never courtly objects, but deeply personal ones. The flat, crisply cut bezel would also have taken a clean impression in wax, so the ring may well have served its owner as a simple personal seal. Condition: Complete and structurally sound, with a dark green-brown patina and warm reddish cuprous highlights. The engraved star and hatched border are crisp and fully legible; the shoulders retain their moulded ribbing. Light surface wear and minor casting irregularities are consistent with age and period use. No restorations or modern repairs. Still wearable. Details: Material: Bronze, cast and hand-engraved Period: Medieval / Early Modern, ca. 14th–17th century AD Ring size: 54 (EU) Weight: 5 g Provenance: Ex European private collection, acquired on the German art market in the late 1990s.
