Alle Auktionen / Sonstige / Mexican Viceregal School (c. 1780) - Our Lady of Light of León
- Oil on metal sheet. Remnants of sealed stamps or reliquaries on the back. - This piece adheres rigorously to the iconography promoted by Jesuit Juan Antonio Genovesi from 1722 in Palermo, whose mystic origin lies in a vision revealed to a beatified person to fix the definitive representation of the invocation. The devotion was introduced in Mexico by José María Genovesi, moving the image to the Villa de León in 1732. The museum’s composition faithfully translates that vision: Mary, dressed in white and blue, holds the Child Jesus while he pulls a burning heart from an angelic basket; simultaneously, the Virgin rescues a soul from the jaws of Leviathan, under the presence of crown-bearing angels. From an analytical perspective, the work presents a singular complexity due to the coexistence of disparate stylistic traits that complicate its chronology. While the brushwork exhibits the rigidity and schematicism typical of a non-academically trained artisan, the anatomical treatment of the rescued soul reveals an unusual naturalism, closer to academic or nineteenth-century canons. This divergence between the popular workmanship of the ensemble and the sophistication of the nude poses a historical dichotomy: could it be a nineteenth-century painter anchored in the Baroque tradition with modern influences, or a master from the late eighteenth century whose handling of the figure already foreshadows the transition toward academicism. - Image dimensions without frame: 23.5 x 35 cm / 33.5 x 44.5 cm with an antique custom-made frame.
