Julie & the Lion – Advertising Study, UK, 1965 Photographer: Michael Joseph Photographed: UK, 1965 Medium: Original vintage darkroom photograph Signed and annotated by Michael Joseph A lion, five immaculately dressed men - cigarettes included - and one rather glamorous young woman reclining in the foreground. Pure Michael Joseph. Created in 1965, this wonderfully eccentric image already contains many of the ingredients that would become signatures of Michael’s advertising photography: large groups, animals, carefully orchestrated chaos, humour and a composition in which there is something happening everywhere you look. The young woman in the foreground is Julie, who was inserted into the scene quite deliberately to add an extra point of visual interest. As was so often the case in advertising photography, budgets were tight, and Michael became extremely resourceful at using the people, props and opportunities available to him rather than adding another professional model to the bill. Julie’s presence gives the photograph its wonderfully incongruous finishing touch - and, decades later, perhaps much of its charm. Behind her, the suited men appear to be attempting to organise the distinctly unimpressed lion, creating a scene poised somewhere between sophisticated advertising photograph and glorious absurdity. This is an authentic vintage darkroom photograph, personally signed and annotated by Michael Joseph, offering not only a collectible photographic object but a fascinating glimpse behind the scenes of 1960s British advertising photography, when imagination frequently had to compensate for limited budgets. Stylish, surreal and delightfully improbable - an early Michael Joseph composition in which every element seems to have its own story.
