Michael Landy had originally encountered Swiss artist Jean Tinguely’s work as an art student in 1982, when he had attended his retrospective at the Tate Gallery. The present work is one of a series of drawings and paintings by Landy on the subject of Tinguely's self-destructing machine - 'Homage to New York'. Tinguely’s self-destructing machine was constructed in March 1960 in the garden of the Museum of Modern Art. Upon its three-week completion, the 27-minute auto-destructive performance resulted in the work bursting into flames; however, it did not self-destruct fully, and the fire brigade and museum staff were forced to intervene. All that remained of the project were a few fragments and photographic records, from which Landy based his series. Landy was in part drawn to this self-destructive kinetic art following his own project 'Break Down', in 2001, where he destroyed all 7,227 of his worldly possessions in a former department store. .
