BAUDIER, Michel (1589–1645) Inventory of the General History of the Turks. Or describing the wars of the Turks, their conquests... from the year 1200 to the year 1640. Fourth revised and enlarged edition. Rouen: at Clément Malassis, Lovys Oursel, and Jacques Besongne, 1641. Quarto volume (approximately 24 x 17 cm), old full parchment binding of the period. Fourth edition of this major historical work written by Michel Baudier of Languedoc, counselor and historiographer to the King. The copy traces the history of the Ottoman Empire and its clashes with Christian powers (Hungarians, Venetians, Spaniards, Knights of Rhodes, etc.) from the 14th century up to 1640. Binding from the period in full soft parchment (parchment-style), plain spine cords (showing traces of old handwritten inscriptions on the spine and boards). Boards worn by use, the years and the patina of time. Old, rough edges. Parchment heavily patinated, worn and rubbed, with localized losses, rounded corners and structural use defects, bearing witness to a life of extensive reading. The stitches and visible cords at the back remain sound as part of the bound block. Title page adorned with a typographic frame and old-era handwritten notes. Presence of ample indices (Names of the François who appear in this History, Summaries of the chapters from Book I to Book X). The interior paper generally yellowed and stained by foxing, typical of seventeenth-century Rouen印 impressions. Seventeenth-century historical works dealing with the Ottoman Empire (Turcica) were extremely sought after in cabinets of curiosities and erudite libraries of the Classical period. This copy has a particular bibliophilic charm: its title page bears several old manuscript annotations (signatures and historical possession marks, notably dated 1670 and 1816 by one “Rose Madeleine Bouilly”), as well as partial monastic or religious provenance mentioning “with permission of the Mother Prioress,” indicating that it passed through a convent library in the Ancien Régime before traversing the centuries.
