Michel Menot - Sermones Quadragesimales (Lenten Sermons)...

1517 RARE FIRST EDITION POST INCUNABLE, a collection of several hundreds sermons by Michel Menot (c. 1440–1518), an French Franciscan friar, and professor of theology in Paris. 3 BOOKS/PARTS IN ONE VOLUME, RARE, NO COPIES FOR SALE. This is a large collection of sermons designed for most of the year and for the season of Lent (Sermones Quadragesimales), written for the holidays, to guide the faithful to penance and to summarize Christian doctrine. This book is characterized by great cleanliness and quality of printing, title in red and black, beautiful type and decorations, large gothic initials for each sermon with flowers, squirrels, animals and contains the typical medieval imagery. The book was printed in Paris in 1517 by Claude Chevallon (1479–1537), a prominent 16th-century Parisian printer and bookseller who played a significant role in disseminating theological works, including the posthumous publications of Michel Menot's sermons. Menot concentrated on the rhetorical strategy necessary to move his audience, rather than simply lecturing in beautiful Latin on the complex theological aspects of Christian life and penance, and always adapting the biblical stories to the medieval life of that era. Michel Menot also known as Michaelis Menoti or Menotus was one of the most prominent and popular preachers in Paris during the early 16th century, alongside his fellow Franciscan Olivier Maillard and the Dominican preacher Guillaume Pépin. Extract from the Paris Parliament dated at the beginning and end of the volume. Beautiful ancient rigid parchment from the period, solid and intact binding, text printed in Gothic type in double columns, and hundreds of beautifully decorated drop caps/chapters. 1517-1519 COMPLETE EDITION, NO COPIES FOR SALE. ONLY 5 COPIES AVAILABLE IN PUBLIC LIBRARIES, please check this page https://www.ustc.ac.uk/editions/184065. For example for the "Prodigal Son" sermon, Menot presented biblical narratives in a highly vivid, semi-dramatic form. He walked through stories step-by-step, adding dramatic details and dialogue—such as giving the "Prodigal Son" a resolute speech when demanding his inheritance from his father. Menot gave the "Prodigal Son" contemporary street wisdom, having him declare that "sans monsieur d'argenton" ("without mister money"), one can achieve nothing in the world. His preaching style was renowned for being vigorous and homely. Menot was famous for his highly theatrical, impassioned, and sometimes colloquial preaching style, often freely mixing Latin and French in his sermons to reach common audiences, to capture imagination and attention of the faithful and help priests propagate the faith. He was heavily criticized and mocked by Voltaire for his "bastardly and macaronic" linguistic style, which was unbecoming of an intellectual purist. But Voltaire failed to understand that they lived in different eras: the level of education and literacy in the Middle Ages was zero compared to that of the 18th century. If Menot had spoken only in Latin, no one would have understood him and he would have alienated people. But being a Franciscan friar, a mendicant order, and sworn to poverty and brotherhood, it was he who had to remain humble and accessible and approach people, using their language and the most popular neologisms of the moment to be on the same level as the spectator and not create any barriers, even at the risk of being ridiculed, but almost always managing to elicit a thread of sympathy that would open the floodgates of empathy. The volume contains hundreds of sermons, as well as rare accounts of medieval daily life, like healing methods, lifestyle and eating habits, pets, hunting, money, superstitions... The Franciscan friar Menot, as a mendicant order and "street preachers," interpreted the needs of the moment; and he railed against usury, luxury, everyday vices, prostitution, the greed and speculation of merchants, engaged in dialogue with laypeople, and sought increasingly sophisticated techniques to improve the memorization of the faith.
