1950s White Cotton and Lace Table Linen with 12 Matching Napkins – An Elegant French Vintage Set with Chateau Provenance An elegant coordinated set of 1950s white cotton table linen, complete with 12 matching lace-trimmed napkins. Combining the simplicity of fine white cotton with delicate lace insets and embroidery, this charming vintage set offers a wonderful opportunity to dress a dining table with the understated elegance of mid-century French table linen. The provenance is particularly interesting. Once again, this set comes from the château near my home in France, where I have had the pleasure of discovering and acquiring some magnificent pieces over the past two years. Interestingly, the couple who own the château did not find this set in the linen room, with its ten traditional Normandy armoires filled with beautiful family linen. Instead, it was discovered quite by chance in a drawer of an armoire in one of the château's many bedrooms. Apparently, it had remained there since it was acquired around 1950. During the 1950s, this type of table linen became extremely popular in France. Available in haberdashery shops at relatively accessible prices, it allowed ordinary French families to dress their dining tables in a style that looked considerably more luxurious than its cost might suggest. The combination of crisp white cotton, decorative lace and embroidery brought an air of refinement to the family dining room without the expense of more elaborate linen. By the 1960s, however, fashions had changed. Much of this table linen was folded away and returned to the traditional dowry armoires, where it often remained forgotten for decades. Today, it is enjoying a welcome revival, with a younger generation of French enthusiasts rediscovering its charm, delicate workmanship and nostalgic appeal. The condition and details of this particular set make its story even more intriguing. It appears never to have graced the dining table at the château. Indeed, the 12 matching napkins were still sewn together at one of their four points, a charming detail that supports the impression that the set saw little, if any, use. The table linen measures a generous 2.60 metres in length, making it an attractive size for a dining table. The decorative details have been carefully arranged. Delicate lace insets are beautifully distributed across the white cotton, while embroidered embellishments enhance both the upper and lower sections of the solid cotton fabric. The four corners feature a long lace border, complemented by smaller lace inserts positioned at regular intervals along the sides. The 12 matching napkins measure 40 × 40 cm. Each features a small piece of lace in one corner, echoing the decorative details of the main table linen and bringing the ensemble together harmoniously. A lovely vintage French set with an appealing château provenance, delicate decorative work and the timeless freshness of white cotton and lace. Equally suited to a traditional French country table or a more contemporary setting, it offers a charming way to bring a little of France's mid-century dining tradition back to life. Please take a moment to examine the photographs, which show the details of the lace, embroidery and overall design.
