Alle Auktionen / Sonstige / Miguel Ángel Follente (1950) - The Modern Life, II
- Oil on canvas. Original canvas. Hand-signed. - In this painting by Miguel Ángel Follente, the portrait of the ninety-something businessman becomes the ultimate emblem of the transition toward cybernetic alienation. With the face replaced by a bluish screen reflecting interfaces of digital windows, the work mordantly captures how individual identity began to be devoured by personal computers, floppy disks, compact discs, and the saturation of computer files that already then walled off the worker’s personal space. Far from the liberating utopia with which the technological revolution was sold at the end of the 20th century, the scene reveals a bureaucratic data world where the subject is reduced to an extension of his own laptop, devoid of human traits and trapped in a static labyrinth of cathode-ray tube screens, cables, and magnetic media. This internal dehumanization found its perfect external correlate in the horizon marked by the whirlwind of the modern metropolis. Behind the claustrophobic office walls depicted by Follente beats the implicit image of the vertical city: a jungle of glass-and-concrete skyscrapers cut through by frenetic car traffic that set the relentless pace of rush hours. The diagrams, barcodes, and statistics that flank the figure synthesize the routine of millions of executives alienated by the daily move from asphalt congestion to the office cubicle. What in the nineties seemed the bold shine of financial and informational progress is here revealed as the embryo of our current digital dystopia, where the constant flow of data and the accelerated consumption ultimately eclipsed human presence. - Image dimensions without frame: 80 x 100 cm / 82 x 103 cm with exclusive custom frame.
