Minerva "Minnie" Josephine Chapman (1858-1947) - La Délicatesse

Minerva "Minnie" Josephine Chapman (1858-1947) - La Délicatesse

- Oil on canvas. Original canvas. - This delicate still life with glass and petunias, painted in 1891, is framed within Minerva Josephine Chapman’s formative and Parisian consecration period, during which the artist settled in Paris with her sister Blanche. After expanding her studies in Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Munich, Chapman attended the Académie Julian and received private lessons from Charles Augustus Lasar, who specifically encouraged her toward Impressionist still lifes and outdoor landscapes, further consolidating her training with masters such as Raphaël Collin, Tony Robert-Fleury, and William-Adolphe Bouguereau between 1887 and 1897. The work precisely reflects the financial and artistic independence the painter was able to secure thanks to her father’s success as a banker and to the opening of prestigious academies for women of her era. This 1891 painting foreshadows the maturity of a career that decades later would lead her to be elected a member of the Salon of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1906, to preside over the Union of International Art in 1914, and to establish herself as a reference of the modern, independent woman of the 19th century devoted to the meticulous study of nature. - Image dimensions unframed: 44 x 35 cm / 70 x 60.5 cm with exclusive custom frame.
