EXHIBITIONS "Maccari", Retrospective, Piero Della Francesca Art Gallery, 2002. DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK We offer at auction a piece of notable historical and collecting value: a work from the 1960s by Mino Maccari, the undisputed master of Italian 20th-century art and one of the sharpest, brightest, and most original voices in post-war figurative art. This work is particularly representative of the Master’s sacrilegious style. It depicts two figures in a restaurant: an elderly man of an important appearance, a sort of dignitary, is falling asleep at the table while a charming waitress comes to his aid, bringing a coffee. This type of subject is among Maccari’s most sought after, because it perfectly embodies the author’s exploration of the vices and virtues of contemporary society. It is a museum-caliber work, enriched by a provenance of the highest prestige (directly from the artist’s studio to the private collection of Giovanbattista Vaiani Lisi — founder of the Pier Della Francesca Art Gallery — who was Maccari’s principal gallerist from the 1960s until the Maestro’s death) and by an important exhibition history. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES AND CRITICAL REMARKS ABOUT THE ARTIST Mino Maccari (Siena, 1898 – Rome, 1989) was an Italian painter, engraver, writer, and journalist, a central and polymath figure of the 20th-century cultural scene. From the 1920s he established himself as one of the era’s most acute intellectuals, directing the famous magazine Il Selvaggio (official organ of the Strapaese movement), through which he launched a sharp satire with unmistakable illustrations and wood engravings, defending Italian popular traditions against bourgeois and cosmopolitan drift. In the postwar period, his painting exploded into a free, colorful, caustic figuration. Maccari became the great portraitist of the vices, hypocrisies, and weaknesses of Italian society, populating his canvases with magnates, military officers, prostitutes, prelates, and well-dressed bourgeoisie. His brushwork is rapid, nervous, and deeply expressionist in lineage, yet always balanced by a profound chromatic sensitivity and a formidable sense of humor. Alongside painting, he is internationally recognized as one of the greatest engravers of the European 20th century. He participated in numerous editions of the Venice Biennale and the Rome Quadriennale, and received high-level honors. His works are now in the most important Italian modern art galleries and major private collections, confirming him as a giant of Italian satire and painting. SHIPPING AND PACKING Packaging: We guarantee professional, rigid, and custom-reinforced packaging designed to preserve the paper’s total integrity during transit, shielding it from impacts, folds, and humidity. Courier: Tracked, fast, and secure shipping via express courier. Shipping notes: Shipping costs may appear slightly higher than average, reflecting our special attention to packaging and the use of reliable couriers. Platform-stated timeframes are approximate. We generally ship within the indicated terms, sometimes even earlier. It is possible that, during peak periods or if issues arise (e.g., strikes), shipments may slip by a few days. In such cases we keep the buyer constantly informed of the order status and keep the package ready to be sent on the first business day. If the shipment falls on a Friday, we postpone shipping to Monday to avoid risky storage at warehouses over the weekend. Customs and Export (Non-EU): For buyers outside the European Union, shipping may require the technical time needed to obtain the Export License from MiC (Ministry of Culture). Any customs duties are the buyer’s responsibility. Invoicing: Professional seller. The work will be accompanied by a fiscal receipt (or electronic invoice, available on request by sending your details at the time of bidding). Framing and glass: The frame, if present, is part of the sale but is to be considered a gift, so no complaints about its condition will be accepted. Conditions are always exhaustively stated in the description. If glass is present, it will be included in the sale only if the lot is collected in person from our gallery. If shipping, the glass is always removed and is therefore never considered part of the sale.
