"This is a big saltpan on my husband's country on Bentinck Island," she said, and the painting holds that vastness. The vertical white pours down from the upper edge in loaded, unblended strokes, dividing a field of fiery orange-red and narrowing towards a single black column that anchors the composition. Small white marks interrupt the black. The scale places the viewer before the work as before a place, rather than in front of a picture. Mirdidingkingathi Juwarnda Sally Gabori, a senior Kaiadilt woman and among the last generation raised on Bentinck Island before the community was relocated to Mornington Island, began painting in her eighties. Her work carries the memory of that Country and the responsibility of naming it. In Dibirdibi Country the white takes on the glare of salt and open sky, while the red ground burns around it. Rather than describing landscape from a fixed viewpoint, Gabori builds Country through colour and the weight of the brush, and the density of the paint, with its visible ridges and pulls, holds the physical labour of remembering. The work was in the collection of Pat Corrigan AM and is reproduced in the 2015 publication on his Gabori holdings. The remainder of that collection was later acquired by the Fondation Opale, Switzerland, which today holds a significant body of her work. © SALLY GABORI / Copyright Agency, 2026
