Mirror - Pair of small mirror-backed wall sconces "Girandola" - Veneto region

Description: A refined and rare pair of small mirror wall sconces with light-bearing mirrors (girandole) in carved and gilded wood, a splendid example of Venetian Baroque of the mid-18th century. The frames feature a gracefully shaped and undulating silhouette, topped by an elaborately carved acanthus-leaf cresting and enriched with volutes and geometric fittings along the edges. The mirrors enclose their original period glass panes, authentic mercury mirrors displaying the charming typical bloom, oxidation, and gray speckling that certify their absolute authenticity and high antique value. At the bottom is fitted a curved arm in fluted bronze/metal complete with a fluted candlestick plate. The pieces preserve the original period gilding with a magnificent lived patina that allows the underlying bole to show through. They have been electrified in modern times through a non-invasive rear modification and the addition of fake candleettes (the system is functional, but easily convertible back to the original wax-candle use). Originating from a prestigious private collection. Material: Carved wood, plaster, gold leaf, fluted bronze/metal arms, mercury mirrors Style: Venetian Baroque / Louis XV Period: very early 1900s External dimensions: 35 x 20 cm Internal dimensions (Mirror): 18 x 13 cm Total thickness/depth: 8 cm (including the protruding candle-arm) Conditions: Very good for its age. Solid wooden structure, splendid natural wear of the gilding and of the mercury mirror that enhances the antique character of the piece. Small technical holes on the back and under the base made for electrification. The detailed photos provide a clear and transparent view of the lot."
