Mississippian Shell Face Maskette Gorget | Weeping Eye Motif

Native American, Mississippian culture. A human face surfaces from the curved wall of a marine gastropod shell, its features pared down to the spare engraved vocabulary of Mississippian shell work. Two annular eyes, each a drilled perforation ringed by concentric incised circles, sit above a nose indicated not by modeling but by seven graduated horizontal lines standing in for the bridge. Zigzag bands fall from beneath each eye, the weeping eye motif recurrent across the Southeastern Ceremonial Complex. A drilled mouth and further hatching complete the face, and two suspension holes pierced behind the natural spines of the shell allowed the maskette to hang at the throat as a pectoral pendant, likely a marker of rank or ritual office. Engraved shell gorgets circulated along extensive Mississippian exchange networks, and their designs recur across enormous distances: Calusa communities of southern Florida harvested and carved whelk and conch shells at the source, coiled-rattlesnake gorgets cluster among the Guale of coastal Georgia, and finished ornaments traveled inland by river and trail. Maskette gorgets are the rarest of the forms. They appear throughout the Southeast, with the densest concentrations in the Ohio River valley, eastern Tennessee, and the Arkansas delta, and outliers recorded as far away as North Dakota. The canonical type carries a bas-relief nose, drilled eyes, an engraved or drilled mouth, and frequently zigzag or forked markings beneath the eyes; the present example substitutes a graduated line group for the modeled nose, a variant treatment worth noting. Dating remains contested. Maskettes are commonly recovered alongside 16th century Spanish trade goods yet are absent from the classic mound centers that ceased activity in the fourteenth century, which argues for a late horizon of roughly 1500 to 1700. Miniature shell cameos under two inches wide are among the celebrated finds from the Spiro site in eastern Oklahoma, whose Craig Mound produced one of the greatest assemblages of engraved shell in North America.
