MITJILI NAPURRULA Pintupi language, c.1945 - 2019 Watiya at Uwalki, 2001 acrylic on linen 183 x 81 cm bears inscription verso: IK01MN49, Mitjili Napurrula, Ikuntji Women's Art Centre, 81x183 cm, 03/01 PROVENANCE Ikuntji Women's Art Centre, Northern Territory, Cat No. IK01MN49 The Collection of Barbara Hansen, Victoria Accompanied by a receipt and certificate of authenticity from Ikuntji Women's Art Centre This painting depicts Uwalki, the Country of Mitjili Napurrula's father, situated south of Kintore within the sweeping sandhill landscape known as tali pulka. The Tjukurrpa associated with Uwalki is closely connected to the spear story painted by Mitjili's full brother, Turkey Tolson Tjupurrula. Central to Mitjili's paintings are the trees of this Country, particularly the white gums. Their timber has long been used to make important implements and ceremonial objects, including nulla nullas. Uwalki is characterised by pristine sandhill Country, where stands of desert oak (kurrkarra) alternate with pukarra, small bushes that grow among the sandhills. Their roots hold precious drinking water, making them an important resource within this desert environment. Through her distinctive representations of Uwalki, Mitjili evokes both the physical character of her father's Country and the Tjukurrpa, knowledge and cultural practices embedded within its landscape. © MITJILI NAPURRULA / Copyright Agency, 2026
